Working Girl How-To: Turn an Extra Closet Into an Office Space
By Emily Fearnley | Contributor I recently got a new job that requires me to work from home, and initially most of my day was spent working on my laptop from the couch. As you can imagine, sitting on a couch all day in the same position can get to be a bit wearing (both physically and mentally!) after a while. And because I was in the living room, I would end up turning on the TV for background noise, getting up to switch out the laundry, doing dishes that were daunting me in the sink…you get the idea. Working from the couch inevitably became quite distracting, and quickly. I was in dire need of a home office space to allow myself to focus on my work, so I made one. I happened to have a storage closet in my bedroom that I was able to repurpose. If you have a spare closet or nook in your home and are in need of an office space, you’re in luck! Here are a few tips to help you create your own perfect home office.
Choose a space where you’ll be able to focus. It’s key to find a place in your house where you’re the least likely to be distracted, and that perfect spot may be different for everyone. For me, it was my bedroom (and because I had a spare closet in there), but for you it may be in your kitchen. To each her own!
Decorate with things that make you happy. In order for me to work most efficiently, I have to want to sit at my workspace all day. What better way to do that than to surround myself with the things that make me all warm and fuzzy inside! I printed all of my favorite Instagram pictures (thanks to socialprintstudio.com) of my family, my friends, and other scenic photos I love. I also printed some of my most inspiring Pinterest quotes and collaged it all together into a backdrop for my desk space.
Don’t forget the necessities. Of course, an office space wouldn’t be complete without a few things – a desk and chair, a filing cabinet for all of that paperwork you know you’ve been hoarding in a box under your bed, some shelving for books or other decor, a lamp or light so you can see, and your various office supplies. I have Target and a local handyman to thank for helping my closet-turned-office come together.
In these three simple steps, you can create an office space in your home that fits your style and personality perfectly!
